Greta's recovery weeks continued through Monday, with a few more firsts, including sitting "cross-legged" in her bed, and sitting in the living room chair (not in her wheelchair). She had more sessions with her teacher, and was glad to be learning new things. And, after each session, she teaches her parents what she's just learned.
One of the best outcomes of Greta's recovery weeks was that she managed to put on weight, making her stronger for the chemo ahead. On Tuesday, it was back to the hospital for chemo that night and Wednesday. She got a visit from a puppy , and impressed the nurses by demonstrating how she can stand and take steps. Since this chemo included the drugs that gave her the worst reaction (nausea, vomiting, etc) last, everyone was nervous about how she would react, and expecting to have complications (meaning a longer stay at the hospital). She did experience a couple of very tough nights, but the team kept her plied with anti-nausea meds which had a side effect of making her sleepy. As the nurse commented when discussing whether to wake her, "let her sleep...its better than vomiting." The family was expecting to be in the hospital at least through Saturday, so it was a wonderful surprise when Greta was deemed well enough to go home on Thursday night!
Despite some minor blips (=puking), she made improvements, had some food, and said she was feeling better on Friday. The nausea hasn't fully left yet, but they are slowly increasing her food intake They now have two weeks off chemo, so Greta will have more time to recover her eating, and continue to practice standing/moving.
