The Erskines returned to the hospital for Greta's second chemo visit, which is expected to last from Tuesday (yesterday) through Friday. After some waiting for bloodwork, she was okayed to proceed, and checked-in before the treatment would start in the evening. As a nice surprise, there were several therapy dogs making the rounds, so Greta got to meet some furry friends while getting settled. This week's chemo drug should not cause as much nausea as her first treatment, and if it does, it should only be within the first 24 hours. This means the anti-nausea drugs can be administered while Greta is in the hospital, via her port - a relief! The doctors also let them know that if she processes the drug at the expected rate, Greta could be discharged on Friday evening, and be able to spend the weekend at home. While Greta's broken leg is still healing, the doctors told her she would need to stand up three times each day to strengthen her good leg. It was very intimidating to hear, even with the standing practice she's been doing at home. But, if all goes well, they hope that she will be able to transition to a walker in the next few weeks. Last night (the first night) was a bit rough, with not much sleep - Greta was being delivered a lot of fluids and needed to get up every hour to use the bathroom. Thankfully, the fluids decreased in the morning, and she was able to sleep for longer stretches, just waking every four hours for a urine sample. She continues to have a very sore head/scalp as her hair falls out and can barely tolerate hats, headscarves, or even laying on a pillow. From what we've heard and read, the soreness should go away once all her hair is gone. Alex and Sarah have been able to arrange it so they can be with Greta during her treatment/hospital stay, with family covering times when they need to dash home for a shower.
Thank you to all who have been posting messages, sending artwork for Greta's room, providing gift cards and donations, and keeping Greta and her family in your thoughts and prayers! Your support and encouragement mean a lot!
