Another busy week for the Erskines!

On Saturday, Greta, Alex, and Sarah headed “up north” to stay overnight Muskegon before attending Zoë’s end-of-camp performance, and taking her home (photos). Everyone was exhausted Sunday for the drive back home!

After the big weekend, it was back to the hospital on Monday, but Greta’s counts weren’t high enough to proceed with chemo that evening. Everyone was disappointed for the delay, but always relieved that her care team ensures her body is ready to deal with the chemo drugs before beginning. To offset the disappointment, Greta and Alex stopped for a delicious lunch on the way home (photo).

Alex and Greta headed back to the hospital on Wednesday with fingers and toes crossed for luck…and it worked! Her hemoglobin was slightly low, but she was admitted, got blood, and then started the chemo that evening. That night, as she was drifting off to sleep in her “relaxed” (also drugged) state, with Sarah sitting with her, she asked her mom, “When I wake up, will you be next to me?” Ever the realist, Sarah responded, “Nope.” (Alex was returning to the hospital to take over later that night). We won’t hold our breath for a melodramatic Hallmark Channel movie based on their relationship.

The next two days went well: On Thursday, Greta had a visit from a beautiful dog called “Bruno”, ate well, and visited with Grandma and Papa. On Friday, she was in a great mood. When the hospital’s art lady brought supplies, Greta made a crown for Chonk (government name, “François). Grandma was amazed that Greta saw the box of blocks and knew right away what she would make. As Grandma put it, “No pattern, just imagination!” (photo)

Her counts are nearing where they need to be for discharge, so we are hoping she’ll be home by Saturday night. Because chemo was delayed this week, it will also be delayed next week… for what we hope will be her last treatment!
